A chegada de Firmino, antigo morador que se mudou para Salvador fugindo da pobreza, altera o panorama pacato do local, polarizando tensões. Firmino tem uma atração por Cota, mas não consegue esquecer Naína que, por sua vez, gosta de Aruã. Firmino encomenda um despacho contra Aruã, que não é atingido, ao contrário da aldeia que vê a rede arrebentada, impedindo o trabalho da pesca. Firmino incita os pescadores à revolta contra o dono da rede, chegando a destruí-la. Policiais chegam à aldeia para controlar o equipamento. Na sua luta contra a exploração, Firmino se indispõe contra o Mestre, intermediário dos pescadores e do dono da rede. Um pescador convence Aruã de pescar sem a rede, já que a sua castidade o faria um protegido de Iemanjá. Os pescadores são bem sucedido na empreitada, destacando-se a liderança de Aruã. Naína revela para uma preta velha o seu amor impossível por Aruã. Diante da sua derrota contra o misticismo, Firmino convence Cota a tirar a virgindade de Aruã, quebrando assim o encantamento religioso de que ele estaria investido por Iemanjá. Aruã sucumbe à tentação. Uma tempestade anuncia o "barravento", o momento de violência. Os pescadores saem para o mar, com a morte de dois deles, Vicente e Chico. Firmino denuncia a perda de castidade de Aruã. O Mestre o renega. Os mortos são velados, e Naína aceita fazer o santo, para que possa casar com Aruã. Ele promete casamento, mas antes decide partir para a cidade de forma a trabalhar e conseguir dinheiro para a compra de uma rede nova.
